Glasgow vs London: Where has safer roads for travelling to staycations?
Staycations are becoming an increasingly popular choice for families and holiday makers for a number of reasons, but in a world where there are thousands of road collisions a year, where is safer – London or Glasgow?
Staycations are becoming increasingly popular in the UK, with holidaymakers flocking to city destinations such as Glasgow, London, Cardiff and Manchester. Choosing a destination that holiday makers can drive to means:
- Cheaper getaways, including cheaper transportation,
- More flexibility in travel timings,
- Flexibility for those travelling with children.
Yet while these benefits provide a great opportunity to explore places closer to home for less, safety on the roads becomes increasingly more important.
Our partner BRAKE shared data revealing five people die every day on the road in the UK and 80 are seriously injured (10-year average from 2014-2023). Given this information, we carried out research to determine where is safer to travel for a staycation – London or Glasgow.
Where has safer roads for staycations?
Our research revealed that while on a staycation in London, more than 15% were involved in an accident, yet when the same question was asked to those who staycation-ed in Glasgow, it was revealed that less than one in ten had been involved in a road collision.
While historically the overall rates of injury are lower than in England and Wales, travellers should still consider road safety in Scotland. According to Transport Scotland, the killed and seriously injured rates of car users in Scotland have typically been substantially higher than those of England & Wales.
Road safety plans in Scotland
Road safety in Scotland seems to be a constant mission for those in government. Transport Scotland have shared a framework which sets out a vision for Scotland to have the best road safety performance in the world by 2030.
The Scottish Government published the new Road Safety Framework in February 2021 and it has had mixed reviews based on data that has been shared. There were 4,251 injury road collisions reported in 2023, 102 more than in 2022. Although the number of reported collisions has been falling over the past ten years, there have been rises in the past 3 years due to recovery from the pandemic of 2020. However, despite this rise, the figure for 2023 was 53% lower than in 2013; the fourth lowest figure since current records began in 1970.
